On August 2, 2023, at about 1:10 PM, a fatal motor vehicle collision, involving a bicyclist occurred in the area of Kalanianaole Highway and Bell Street in the Waimanalo area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 68 year old male bicyclist was traveling eastbound on the shoulder of Kalanianaole, when he attempted to cross the roadway and was struck by a vehicle being driven by a 70 year old male motorist.
As a result of the collision, the male bicyclist was ejected off his bicycle and was taken to an area hospital in critical condition. While at the hospital, the male bicyclist succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The male bicyclist was not wearing a helmet.
The male motorist and his passenger were not injured and remained at the scene.
At this time, speed, drugs and alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors in this collision.
This is the 28th traffic fatality on Oahu this year, compared to 26 during the same time in 2022.
