On February 10, 2024, at about 10:30 PM, a critical motor vehicle collision occurred in the intersection of Kapiolani Boulevard and Waiaka Road Street in the McCully area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 17-year-old juvenile male motorist and his three passengers were traveling westbound on Kapiolani Boulevard, and at the intersection of Kapiolani Boulevard and Waiaka Road he struck a 34-year old adult male, who was operating a Surron electric vehicle. It appears that the 34-year old male was turning left, from Waiaka Road, against an illuminated red light signal.
As a result of the initial collision, the 34-year-old male operator was ejected onto the roadway.
The 34-year-old male motorist was transported by emergency medical services to an area hospital in critical condition.
The 17-year-old juvenile male motorist and his (3) juvenile passengers were transported by emergency medical services to an area hospital in good condition.
The 34-year-old male motorist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
At this time speed, drugs, and alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors of this collision.
On February 11, 2024, at about 1:55 AM, the Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section was informed that the 34-year-old male had succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
This is the 3rd Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year, as compared to 5 at the same time in 2023.
The investigation is ongoing.
