On Friday, August 12, 2021, at about 11:55 P.M., there was a fatal motor vehicle collision on the H-1 Freeway eastbound prior to the Queen Emma Street overpass in the Honolulu area.
A 23-year-old Kailua female driver and her passengers, a 33-year-old female, and a male passenger who has yet to be identified were traveling eastbound on the H-1 Freeway at a high rate of speed. An HPD Blue and White vehicle was stopped with its emergency lights flashing in the slow lane of the H-1 Freeway to assist a stalled motorist when it was rear-ended by the 23-year-old Kailua female driver.
As a result of the initial collision, the 23-year-old Kailua female driver’s vehicle continued on and then collided into the center median before coming to final rest.
The 33-year-old female passenger was taken to an area hospital in critical condition.
The unidentified male passenger was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision.
The HPD Officer was not injured and was standing outside of the HPD Blue and White vehicle at the time of the collision.
The 23-year-old Kailua female was subsequently placed under arrest for Negligent Homicide in the First Degree, and Operating a Vehicle under the Influence of an Intoxicant.
At this time, both speed and alcohol appear to be contributing factors.
This is the 29th Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year, as compared to 31 at this same time in 2020.
The investigation is ongoing.
