On August 7, 2023, around 5:30 PM, a fatal motor vehicle collision occurred in the area of the H-1 Freeway eastbound, near the Kaimakani Street overpass in the Aiea area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 46-year-old male motorist had pulled over to the eastbound shoulder of the H-1 Freeway due to mechanical issues with the vehicle.
The 46-year-old male exited his vehicle and was positioned at the front of his vehicle attempting to address the problem, when a 56-year-old female motorist traveling eastbound on the H-1 Freeway drifted into the eastbound shoulder and rear-ended the vehicle of the 46-year-old male.
As a result of the collision, the man’s vehicle was pushed forward, striking him in the process.
As a result of the collision, the 46-year-old male was transported to an area hospital in critical condition where he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The 56-year-old female motorist was treated at the scene by EMS and refused to be transported.
At this time, speed, drugs, and alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors in this collision.
This is the 32nd Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year, as compared to 29 at the same time in 2022.
The investigation is ongoing.
