On November 13, 2024, at about 9:43 PM, a fatal motor vehicle collision involving a moped occurred on Monsarrat Avenue near Kalakaua Avenue, in the Waikiki area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department that a 30-year-old male moped operator was traveling eastbound on Monsarrat Avenue when it rear ended a transit bus which was parked unoccupied alongside Monserrat Avenue.
As a result of the collision, the 30-year-old male moped operator was pinned beneath the rear of the transit bus and had to be extracted by the Honolulu Fire Department.
The 30-year-old male moped operator was taken to an area hospital in critical condition where he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The 30-year-old male moped operator was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
At this time alcohol appears to be a contributing factor of this collision. It is unknown at this time if speed or drugs were contributing factors.
This is the 41st Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year, as compared to 49 at the same time in 2023.
The investigation is ongoing.
