On September 24, 2023, at about 3:53 PM, a motor vehicle collision involving a moped collision occurred in the area of South King Street and Victoria Street in the Honolulu area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 21-year-old male motorist was traveling eastbound on South King Street, just past Victoria Street, when he attempted to make a left turn into a private driveway and collided with a 71-year-old male moped rider who was traveling eastbound in the protected bike lane on South King Street.
As a result of the collision, the 71-year-old male moped rider was ejected onto the roadway.
The 71-year-old male moped rider was transported to an area hospital in good condition.
The 71-year-old male moped rider was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
The 21-year-old male motorist was not injured and remained at the scene of this collision.
On November 1, 2023, at about 4:35 PM, the Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section was informed by the Medical Examiner’s Office that the 71-year-old male moped rider had succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
This is the 48th Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year, as compared to 38 at the same time in 2022.
The investigation is ongoing.
