On February 8, 2024, at about 2:06 PM, a serious motor vehicle collision involving a moped occurred on South Beretania Street, near Keeaumoku Street in the Honolulu area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 40-year-old male motorist was traveling westbound on South Beretania Street when he collided with a 49-year-old male moped operator who was traveling northbound on Keeaumoku Street and made a left turn from Keeaumoku Street onto South Beretania Street disregarding a displayed red traffic signal.
As a result of the collision, the 49-year-old male moped operator was ejected onto the roadway. He was transported, via Emergency Medical Service, to an area hospital in serious condition.
The 49-year-old male moped operator was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
The 40-year-old adult male motorist was not injured as a result of the collision.
On February 14, 2024, the Vehicular Homicide Section was informed by the Medical Examiner’s Office that the 49-year-old male moped operator had succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
At this time, speed does not appear to be a factor in this collision. It is unknown if alcohol or drugs were a contributing factor of the 49-year-old moped operator.
This is the 5th Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year, as compared to 7 at the same time in 2023.
The investigation is ongoing.
