On December 8, 2022, at about 11:20 PM, a fatal motor vehicle collision, involving two motor vehicles, occurred on Kamehameha Highway in the Haleiwa area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 19-year-old adult male motorist, traveling westbound on Kamehameha Highway, crossed the yellow double solid lane markings into oncoming traffic, and collided into a 65-year-old adult male motorist.
As a result of the collision, the 65-year-old male motorist succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene and his 65-year-old adult female passenger was transported to an area hospital in serious condition.
The 19-year-old male motorist was transported to an area hospital in serious condition and was upgraded to good condition upon arrival.
The 19-year-old male motorist was later placed under arrest for Negligent Homicide in the Second Degree and Negligent Injury in the First Degree.
It appears that speed may have been a contributing factor in this collision. At this time, it is unknown if alcohol or drugs are factors.
This is the 50th Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year, compared to 42 during the same time in 2021.
The investigation is ongoing.
