On November 21, 2023, at about 9:50 PM, a fatal motor vehicle collision occurred in the area of Nimitz Highway and Kalihi Street in the Kalihi area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, that a 28-year-old male motorcyclist was traveling westbound on Nimitz Highway at a high rate of speed. The 28-year-old male motorcyclist disregards a red light and collides with a city bus making a left turn driven by a 46-year-old female from Nimitz Highway onto Kalihi Street. The 28-year-old motorcyclist was ejected onto the roadway and a 68-year-old male motorist collided with the 28-year-old motorcyclist.
The 28-year-old motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
As a result of the collision, the 28-year-old motorcyclist was transported via American Medical Response to an area hospital in critical condition where he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
At this time it appears speed may be a contributing factor of this collision. It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were factors.
This is the 52nd Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year, as compared to 48 at the same time in 2022.
The investigation is ongoing.
