On Thursday, February 20, 2025, at approximately 5:57 P.M., a fatal motor vehicle collision occurred on the H-1 Freeway westbound before the Queen Emma overpass in the Punchbowl area.
It was reported to the Honolulu Police Department, Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section that a 22-year-old male motorist was traveling westbound on the H-1 Freeway at a high rate of speed when he collided with a 66-year-old male motorist and his passengers, a 44-year-old male, 40-year-old female, and a juvenile male.
As a result of the initial collision, the 22-year-old male motorist’s vehicle overturned, ejecting the 22-year-old male motorist onto the roadway.
The 22-year-old male motorist was taken to an area hospital in critical condition, where he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The 22-year-old male motorist was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.
The 66-year-old motorist and his occupants sustained minor injuries and refused treatment at the scene.
At this time, speed appears to be a contributing factor of this collision. It is unknown at this time if drugs or alcohol were contributing factors.
This is the 9th Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year as compared to 5 at the same time in 2024.
The investigation is ongoing.
